  • The feast day of St. John, the Apostle and Evangelist.

Saturday, Dec. 28

  • Feast day of The Holy Innocents in which we commemorate the children killed by Herod in his search for Jesus. CatholicCulture.org states:  “To recall the grief of their mothers the Church wears purple today. In Mass she hushes her joyous Gloria in Excelsis and the Alleluias...The feast of the Holy Innocents is an excellent time for parents to inaugurate the custom of blessing their children.”

  • The Holy Name of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Following Jewish law, Jesus was circumcised and formally named eight days after his birth.  The name Jesus is derived from a Hebrew word meaning “savior.”

  • The Epiphany, or the manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles.  Worship by the Magi is celebrated this day because they were Gentiles, their act of worship was considered the first sign of Jesus’ mission to redeem all of humanity.
